BHRT in the Summer: How to Store Your Hormones in the Heat

Women in the summer on BHRT

Summer is in full swing, and as temperatures rise, you might be wondering how the heat can affect your bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)

At The Marion Gluck Clinic, we know that seasonal changes can have a real impact on how you feel and how your hormone therapy works.

So, whether you’re soaking up the sun on a summer holiday or enjoying the latest heatwave here at home, here’s how to look after your hormone treatment effectively in the hot weather.

How The Heat Affects Your Hormones

The summer heat can make certain hormone-related symptoms feel more intense particularly if you are experiencing symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats or fatigue. This is because your body is already working harder to regulate its temperature, and hormonal changes can make you even more sensitive to the heat.

Hot weather can also lead to dehydration and fatigue making it harder for your hormones to be circulated around your body. At the same time, topical BHRT treatments may not absorb as effectively if your skin is hot, damp, or stickier than usual.

Understanding the effects of heat on your body and hormone treatment will help you adjust your routine and keep your hormone treatment on track during the summer months.

“During the summer months, even small changes in temperature can influence how you feel and how you respond to hormone therapy. Being mindful of how you store and apply your BHRT will  help you maintain consistent results and feel your best, no matter the weather.”

How To Store Your BHRT in Summer

To properly store your bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) in warm weather, keep your treatment in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. For example, avoid leaving it in a hot car, on a windowsill, or in the bathroom where humidity and heat can build up.

Always store your medication in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture and avoid exposing your BHRT to extreme heat or freezing temperatures, as this will affect how well it works.

At the Marion Gluck Clinic, our bioidentical hormones come in a range of forms and are personalised to each patient. This includes bioidentical cream, lozenges and capsules. Here is our expert advice on storing your treatment in the heat.

Transdermal Creams

Store your cream in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not leave it in a hot car, on a windowsill, or in a steamy bathroom. While most creams are stable up to 45°C, exposure to excessive heat can affect consistency and potency. If you’re travelling, consider using a medication cooler bag to store your medication.

How to Apply BHRT cream in the Summer

During the summer, heat and humidity can affect how your skin absorbs BHRT cream. To make sure you’re getting the full benefit of your treatment, here are our expert tips for applying your cream effectively in warm conditions.

  • Start with clean, dry skin. Make sure the area is free from moisturiser, sunscreen, or oil-based products, as these can block absorption. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after applying BHRT cream before using anything else on your skin.

  • Give it time to absorb. In humid weather, your skin might be damper than usual. Allow a few extra minutes for the cream to fully absorb into your skin before getting dressed. This helps prevent the cream from rubbing off on your clothes.

  • Keep the area out of direct sunlight. Applying the cream to areas that are then exposed to sun can affect how the hormones are absorbed. Choose a spot that’s usually covered by clothing and avoid sunbathing immediately after application.

Lozenges

Bioidentical hormones may also be prescribed in the form of oral lozenges. Lozenges are also stable at room temperature but may soften or lose shape in very hot environments. Keep them in their original tray and packaging, and out of direct heat. You may store them in the fridge if travelling somewhere extremely warm.

Oral Capsules

Certain bioidentical hormones may be compounded into capsules for you to take with a glass of water. Store capsules in a cool, dry place, ideally below 45°C. Avoid storing them in areas prone to heat and moisture.

If you find your symptoms are worsening in the heat, or if you experience any unusual side effects, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your hormone doctor. They will assess your symptoms and whether your dose or delivery method needs a slight adjustment.

Remember, summer doesn’t have to disrupt your hormone therapy. With a few sensible precautions and expert tips, you can stay consistent with your treatment and enjoy the sunshine without worry.
